PaaS Engineer - Senior

R 900000 - R 1300000 Annually

We are looking for an experienced and skilled PaaS Engineer to join our client in the financial services industry based in the north of Johannesburg.

Purpose of the role

To articulate, design and implement Infrastructure Platform as a Service solutions (Compute, Storage & Network) for the company, whether on premise or in the cloud as informed by the company’s Business strategy and IT architectural roadmaps and to provide 3rd level escalation support for operations support teams ensuring that the infrastructure platforms meet or exceed availability, quality, performance and resiliency requirements stipulated in SLAs with stakeholders.

Minimum requirements:

  • Must have 10+ years’ work experience within the IT field
  • Relevant IT work experience as an engineer in a compute and storage related discipline
  • Must have working experience in a Financial Industry or service provider to the financial industry institutions
  • Must have a degree or diploma through a recognized institution in Computer Science or Engineering field
  • Must have relevant IT industry certifications
  • Relevant registrations - Cloud Architect certifications (AWS, Google, Rackspace)
  • At least 5+ years’ experience in supporting, implementing and designing of compute, storage and virtualisation solutions
  • Hands-on experience with the following technologies (Hypervisors, Storage and Networking, DNS, IP, Load Balancing, Active Directory, Cloud Technologies)
  • Infrastructure systems project / initiative management/implementation experience


Key Technologies:

  • MS Window (server and desktop), Linux (RHEL & SLES) operating platforms
  • Storage and network virtualisation platform hardware and software (VMWare EMC, NetApp, HP, Cisco)
  • VMware datacentre and Hyper-V technology stacks
  • Shared infrastructure service methodologies (Iaas, Paas)
  • Enterprise Architecture frameworks (TOGAF)
  • Hyper converged technologies
  • Cloud technologies
  • Knowledge of core infrastructure software and services (e.g., Microsoft office suite, DNS, Active Directory, Internet services)
  • Application of the ITIL framework and best practices
  • In-depth knowledge of Hypervisors (VMWare, Hyper-V, Openshit, Acropolis)   
  • In-depth knowledge of the Operating system/Virtualization layer network technology stack.
  • Infrastructure service delivery frameworks (ITIL, Technical fluency in LAN, WAN, and WLAN concepts/theories)
  • NSX


Key responsibilities for this role but not limited to:

  • Interpreting the company’s business strategy and architectural roadmaps into infrastructure platform projects and initiatives.
  • Driving   the crafting and evolution of the company’s technology infrastructure (IaaS, PaaS)  roadmap
  • Driving the company’s virtualization (Compute, Storage & Network) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) journey
  • Driving the company’s on premise (Enterprise/Private cloud) and off-premise (Public loud) technology reference models
  • Provide expert input into the IT budget for the company’s Shared infrastructure (IaaS, PaaS) solution designs, implementations and optimization.
  • Perform "trade off analysis" of alternative technologies when recommending solutions, ensuring they fit architecture principles and business drivers (i.e. costs of supportability, resiliency and quality of solution
  • Lead IaaS/PaaS solution design sessions, specific implementation projects and/or Proofs of Concepts
  • Provide leadership and oversight in a team building solutions and capabilities at scale and at high quality and standards
  • Research and Propose tools & technology choices for delivering high quality, performant and scalable cloud services
  • Demonstrate the expected levels of maturity in managing stakeholders’ expectations as appropriate.
  • Engage with stakeholders to assess and promote platform maturity and to drive out plans for future projects and initiatives
  • Mentor and coach junior Compute and Storage Infrastructure team members and others to help them improve their competencies on the Linux infrastructure platforms.
  • Manage own delivery against the strategic architectural roadmap delivery plan by planning and managing business projects as per prescribed processes and delivery targets.
  • Provide 3rd level escalation support for the Compute and Storage BAU team.
  • Ensure regular involvement in BAU operations support to identify areas for continuous improvement in processes and procedures.
  • Ensure the adoption of applicable leading practices, processes and/ or technologies by creating practical plans for adoption taking into consideration the long-term planning horizons where relevant. 
  • Actively promote awareness of capabilities and limitations of the assigned infrastructure discipline across all stakeholder communities.
  • Actively drive business process improvements both within the team and across IT to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Ensure that departmental governance, processes and procedures are understood and adhered to.
  • Participate in design forum and initiation forum sessions with the Enterprise Architecture team as required.
  • Contribute to the governance of the “As a service” technical architecture elements in conjunction with the Enterprise Architecture team.
  • Responsible for problem resolution of issues in the MS Windows Systems and Virtualization Technology Architecture and work closely with IM IE&SD manager, IM Service Delivery Managers and other ITD team members to manage and contain impact to the business.
  • Design and implement short/long term strategic plans to ensure MS Windows Systems and Virtualization infrastructure capacity meets existing and future requirements
  • Communicate complex technical details/information to non-technical associates in a format and language that is understood by stakeholders to enable buy-in
