One of Africa’s leading financial services organisations is seeking a Chief Risk Officer.


  • Honours in Business, Finance or Economics.
  • Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • 10 - 15 years’ experience in a governance environment in the financial services industry including 5 years’ experience as senior manager and 5 years’ experience of legislation applicable to the financial services industry.
  • Experience in banking regulation or interaction with national regulators preferred.
  • 5+ years of people management experience, including experience as a manager of managers.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a leadership position.
  • Skills
  • Should have experience in partnering with an executive team and have a high level of written and oral communication skills, as well as a strong knowledge of processes.

Job Description:


  • The purpose of this role is to build a risk function and provide strategic, executive leadership and oversight of the Enterprise Risk Management and to act as Responsible Officer in managing a separate legal entity, and so contribute to the achievement of the strategic priorities. The role will report directly to the CEO, with a dotted line reporting into the Board Group Risk Management Committee.
  • Responsibilities / Outputs
  • Setting the vision and strategy for the enterprise risk function, working in conjunction with all other senior leadership across the business
  • Building a robust risk management framework and architecture for the business, and managing the enterprise wide risk
  • Ensuring a system wide view and understanding of the combined risks of the business and their interrelationships
  • Formulating and articulating a coherent risk appetite and related infrastructure.
  • Compiling, assessing and reporting risk information to the top management and the Board
  • Coordinate with the executive team, the development and maintenance of the risk framework.
  • Ensuring that team are monitoring the risk register and any potential changes in the environment which affects the risk profile
  • Monitoring policies and procedures for appropriate risk measures
  • Monitoring industry and regulatory updates, and the policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring robust service provider due diligence is conducted from a risk perspective
  • Proactive recommendations for risk management decisions on losses, risk exposures and risk financing techniques.
  • Promotes and maintains a network of external contacts relevant to risk.
  • Manages highly skilled interdisciplinary and multicultural professionals to develop innovative and effective risk management methodologies and solutions and to strengthen the ability to measure, assess, and manage the different risk portfolios and areas.
  • Responsible for the risk management framework throughout the business including the maintenance of credit risk management, market risk management (including liquidity), operational risk management and other risks such as conduct risk management
  • Developing, managing and refining qualitative and quantitative risk reporting in all risk areas which meets the needs of the Board
  • Working closely with the CEO, CFO, Chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee and the Chair of the Board Risk Committee, other executive and non-executive committee members, senior managers across the business molding a high-achieving, well-controlled organization which can achieve growth targets safely
  • Recommend to the institution and Institutions Clear Boards and subcommittees thereof risk related policies, risk tolerance levels and report performance of financial and investment risks
  • Propose and articulate the board’s risk appetite for financial and investment risks
  • Embedding a positive culture of confident and informed risk-taking
  • Develop a robust risk management process and divisional strategy and structure
  • Develop and allocate divisional budgets to enable division to deliver against targets
  • Lead and direct activities designed to avoid market losses, contagion, and reputation damaging incidents by ensuring accurate and credible risk management that safeguards investors and builds South Africa’s image as an investment destination and so ensure exchange license is renewed annually
  • Contribute to influencing the direction of policy affecting the South African market ecosystem
  • Minimize and avoid losses to the company and the market in general in the event of participant default or unforeseen macro-events
  • Contribute to the management of any industry or country level crisis
  • Oversee, review and respond to policy, brand, standard and regulatory compliance at an executive level
  • Lead policy implementation by meeting regularly with executives at divisional communication sessions and at one-on-one meetings. Ensure risk of default of a participant is minimized by overseeing the management of risk at the CCP to ensure credible and accurate models and methods are applied and by remaining close to market to pre-empt and ensure early identification of market members in distress
  • Make decisions that affect the direction of the division or the organization on a 3-5-year horizon
  • Assisting the Board with the setting of the organizations risk appetite (including but not limited to credit risk, operational risk, market risk, liquidity risk and conduct risk) and implementing key risk indicators
  • Engaging senior management and challenging scenario planning, associated stress testing and documentation; ensuring that risk management processes are embedded and used at appropriate points;
  • Partnering effectively with third parties, regulatory bodies and others
  • Providing essential input as a member of senior management and the executive committee and credibly challenging the management of current issues and the development and implementation of strategy.
  • Team management
  • Should have experience in partnering with an executive team and have a high level of written and oral communication skills, as well as a strong knowledge of processes.
  • Proven ability to oversee several risk types, ideally including credit, market, operational, investment, regulatory and strategic risk and specifically liquidity, refinancing, concentration and counterparty risk.
  • Knowledge of regulatory environment and key regulatory regimes.
  • Leadership skills, including the ability to manage risk, compliance and control activities in a complex financial operation.
  • - Considerable knowledge and experience of best practice risk management and governance frameworks, methodologies, and emerging practice, in relation to the South African financial services context.
  • Skilled communicator with the ability to influence and motivate others.
  • Proven track record of delivering strategic projects.
  • Excellent relationship management skills.
  • Ability to exercise oversight over governance, risk, compliance and control arrangements in a complex financial operation.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to analyze complex information to identify the key issue/action and drive resolution.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of risk control arrangements.
  • Proven relationship with existing financial market regulators an advantage
  • Must be able to deal with complexity and ambiguity and understand the bigger picture.
  • Strong ability to understand and quantify risk.
  • Excellent communication skills and extensive experience developing and presenting complex information in clear and concise manner to Board and Executive team level presentations.
  • Ability to research and understand complex regulatory issues and laws, demonstrate the related risks brought to our organization, and collaboratively work to provide appropriate risk handling activities.
  • Ability to function in deadline intensive environment, managing multiple responsibilities while effectively focusing on priority issues.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
