Risk and Compliance Specialist

A Financial Services company based in the North of Johannesburg have a vacancy for a Risk and Compliance Specialist.


  • Proven experience as compliance manager;
  • 5 years’ experience in an Internal Audit and Compliance Function;
  • In-depth knowledge of the industry standards and regulations;
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment; and
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally.

Educational Level

  • Appropriate Bachelor’s Degree and/or Post Graduate Certificate in Compliance and/or Risk Management and/or Auditing;
  • Legal background will be advantageous;
  • FAIS Qualification RE5 and RE1 will be advantageous.

Risk – Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads the identification, communication, measurement, and management of company-wide risk;
  • Develop Enterprise Risk Management (“ERM”) tools, practices and policies to analyse and report enterprise risk, and manage risks according to an ERM framework;
  • Regulatory and Risk Gap analysis;
  • Provide assistance in reviewing Risk Appetite Statements
  • Drive enterprise-wide remedial risk and compliance action plans (risk mitigation steps) across the business supported by appropriate reporting requirements, as defined from time to time
  • Monitoring of action plans and control environment for all risks as identified on the risk registers;
  • Assistance with compiling strategic risks and reviewing operational risks per department;
  • Ensure the companies risk management policies and strategies are in compliance with applicable regulations and the strategic imperatives of the company;
  • Monitor all operational risk management activities of the company;
  • Manage oversight of incident management process and ensure that business is reporting significant risk event to Risk and Compliance Department;
  • Providing support, education and training to staff to build risk awareness within the organisation;
  • Ensure the maturity of the Risk Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) program within the business, inculcating an organisational culture that places high priority on sound internal controls and policies.

Compliance - Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing maintaining and updating Compliance Risk Management frameworks;
  • Ongoing monitoring – to ensure effective management of compliance risks;
  • Developing and overseeing control systems to prevent or deal with violations of legal guidelines and internal policies;
  • Evaluating the efficiency of controls and improve them continuously;
  • AML: Overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of an anti-money laundering program/systems within the business
  • Support internal and external stakeholder relationships to ensure effective business collaboration;
  • Keep abreast of regulatory developments within or outside of the company as well as evolving best practices in compliance control;
  • Prepare reports for senior management and external regulatory bodies as appropriate;
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory obligations whilst taking a commercial and practical approach to risk-based challenges and offer appropriate solutions
  • Providing training in key legislative areas where necessary;
  • Key legislative areas – FAIS, FICA, Market Conduct, POPIA, NCA, Companies Act ;
  • Other ad hoc projects.

Other – Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with Annual SOX audits; and
  • Ad-hoc request as required
