STUDENT ADVISOR – contract (Higher Education)

Human Resources and Education, Western Cape CPT - Southern Suburbs


Must be available immediately


  • A vocational qualification (NQF Level 6) in the discipline of Counselling, Coaching, Psychology or 5-year cognate field (e.g. HR).
  • Advanced computer literacy including online systems
  • 2 years of full-time administrative experience, ideally within Higher Education
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills
  • Listening to student concerns
  • Finding resolutions
  • Great time management
  • Ability to observe, monitor, collect & record student data
  • Proficiency in Moodle System (Learning Management System)
  • Strong academic and writing skills





Front line assistance and guidance for campus students on all academic, psychosocial and study plan related concerns. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Attends to student enquires within 48 hours;
  • Manages personal study plans queries with the aid of the administration department
  • Be proficient on all aspects of administrative protocols, academic policies, and any other related and ongoing academic developments related to the student body;
  • Be familiar with and provide academic guidance on (course/module changes, career guidance and institutional policies, financial planning, study plans)
  • Ensures that students are familiar with all aspects of the Student Handbook;
  • Monitors, collects, and records student data, eg. attendance registers as required;
  • Monitors student academic performance in through process such as, but not limited to, tracking forms; and report queries and inconsistencies to the Student Review Meeting (SRM)
  • Liaises with Module Facilitators as required.
  • Work closely with administration regarding study plans

  • Running academic workshops
  • Assist in BPsych and Honours selection process



  • Be available to provide basic counselling/ mentoring and/or refer students as needed.
  • Mediate where appropriate and assist in the event of a crisis.
  • Assist in the rollout of Termly orientation
  • Assist in providing Academic workshops
  • Assist in providing student individual tutoring & assistance
  • Assist in facilitating peer support
  • Identifying at risk students and follow up on red flag students (absenteeism, poor performers) daily
  • Liaison between faculty and students with regard to individual student academic issues (physical or emotional illness, etc.)


Developing a community spirit:

  • Assist in developing a committed SRC body
  • Assist with arranging social events and programmes to develop community spirit
  • Assist with the management of effective alumni programmes



  • Assist with the facilitation of orientation of all new students on the campus.
  • Work closely with the administrative, admissions and operations departments in the planning and preparing of the orientation sessions



  • In collaboration with the Head of Student Services, act as a point of contact for all student services and support issues, matters, queries, enquiries, inquiries, concerns that may arise on an ad-hoc basis or recurrent/periodic.
  • Contain and refer where necessary
  • Escalate timely to the Head of Student Services in high stake cases
  • Adopt a preventative or solution focused approach and where necessary


  • General attendance of all staff meetings, academic meetings, management / operations meetings etc
  • Actively involved in Campus events, open day, festival of learning, orientation, educator meetings, graduation etc
  • Reports
